Student Motivation

I am a cheerleader everyday in every meaning of the term.....except for the skirt of course! :) I sing, clap, cheer, smile, dance, laugh..... you name it we do it! I have wiped tears, hugged, patted backs....and wouldn't change any of it for the world! I think my students really appreciate my attitude and positivity on a daily basis.I am very good at checking my problems and stresses at the door and try my best to teach my students to do the same!

Karen,
You approach to reinforcing the development of the "soft skills" is an essential part of their career development. We all know that the majority of jobs are lost due to the lack of soft skills rather than the specific skills of the job. The students I have for the most part do not have extensive experience in the social skill areas so we spend time on language, dress, conduct, etc.. I want them to present themselves as well qualified professionals when they leave my program.

I also pull them outside of the class and kindly talk to them about any personal challenges that I see might hinder their growth in their field of choice --- this could be poor grammar (using NO instead of ANY), chronic lateness (discussing how this practice will harm them in the business world) and then I BEAM and give them lots of kudo's when behavior changes....they know I care, and this motivates them more than anything. Most just want to please and be recognized for doing a good job.

Kimberly,
Well said. We are role models for our students each time the class meets so we need to remind ourselves of how we are presenting ourselves to our students and reflecting on our field.

I motivate my students everyday by being in class on time, by being prepared and ready to teach. I do not expect my students to do something that I am not willing to do.

Nicole,
Way to go! For many of our students having a cheerleader in their lives is the difference between dropping out and completion. Keep sending up the cheers they are making a difference.
