Effective Motivation Techniques
Using personal stories about one's career has an impact on students. Show students that I once sat where they now sit. I have the content and experience to share with them. I have found that you must be flexible and willing to adapt to the needs of each adult learner and focus on individual.
Gary,
This is a fun time with students. It doesn't take long for students to get competitive when they start to realize how much they have learned and how to use this knowledge in a realistic way.

Our clients have many of the same types of vehicles at different facilities. When you solve an issue at one facility I find students like to hear about the issue and experience the problem during their shop time. They tend to be competitive to see if they can figure it out quicker than the previous group.
Aimee,
I agree and use them as well. Students as you know get excited when they hear these stories because they start to see themselves in their field and that there is value in what they are being taught.

I use personal stories all the time. I find it is helpful for the student and their learning as well as it gets them excited. They can see themselves in the field
Karen,
Great strategy to use. This method gets their attention and while you are creating a mystery for them to solve. The student gets to ask "What would I have done in this situation?". The great part of sharing these stories is that you have lived through the experience so the students get to hear how the situation was resolved one way or another. Fun engaging learning opportunity for your students.

I agree that students seem motivated by my personal stories. I didn't realize how powerful this technique was until I kept getting requests for personal experiences. Now I give them half the story and have students write down how they would have handled the situation. Then I tell them what I did (sometimes showing my mistakes).
