The Motivating Instructor

Motivation is a vital factor in the educators's management of learning and behaviour in the classroom. The motivating role of educators incorporates efforts to generate conditions in the classroom setting that will invigorate, direct, and sustain students' performance. This promotes morale, enthusiasm and positive attitudes towards learning.

Amy,
So many of our students have personal issues and challenges that put pressure on them as students. The more we can provide support and enhance their vision of the future the more likely they will be to complete their program.

I absolutely agree with this statement. No matter what is going on outside the door of the classroom, I think a good teacher can help them turn that off and focus/motivate them to do good in class and to see the end - a degree in a career.

Jorge,
Good point and one we need to remember as we enter the classroom each time.

I completely agree with this statement. Students do know after interacting in a classroom for 5 minutes who is the motivated instructor which will encourage them to do their best.

Lisa,
So true and so important. Students in spite of life challenges need to see that during the class sessions they can focus on the content, learning and their professional growth. Life challenges will be waiting for them outside the classroom door but for the duration of the class they can be students and try to forget some of the situations they are facing.

I like this post as it makes me realize that I have the potential to change or even distract students for the time they are in my class from their daily problems to a learning and positive environment.

I feel that the energy and excitement that the instructor has for the subject matter helps to motivate students because it helps them to see the relevance and promise of the subject matter. It excites them to think they may have similar experiences in the near future.

I enjoy motivating my students, even my peers. Oftentimes, individuals are burdened with daily issues and distractions, and this can put a damper on the learning experience. But when we as instructors can put our personal issues aside, and show compassion, motivation, and enthusiam while teaching our various subjects it helps the students shift their focus (even if for a couple of hours) off of their problems and issues, and cause excitement for what they are learning! Even if they are dead-tired. :-)
