Individual Motivators
Students have their own reasons for participating - those personal motivators will keep them coming back.
Megan,
Good way to read your students and then make an appropriate and targeted response to their contribution to the class. That way they know you value them and their opinion.

This idea makes me reflect on gauging personality characteristics of students and using this information to movitate them in specific ways. For instance, when a shy and reluctant student does participate in class discussion, praise them for what they say more than normal. In my experience, this helps build their confidence on an attribute about themselves they can work on. Thus, providing more motivation to speak in class.
Daryl,
Body language is a lot of it. Are they engaged? Are they prepared, on time and offer input in the class. When these items are present or missing the students are sending a message they in terms of the level of their motivation.

What sort clues can I look for from the students?
Murielle,
Yes, they do. This is why it is important to constantly "read" your students so you know when to have such conversations and help the students to continue their progress toward their career goals.

I find the students usually give clues during class. With some students it requires individual conversation to get these clues.
Gregory,
What are some ways you find out what the personal motivators are for your students? Thanks.
