how do we motivate the one person in class who is so hard to get thru too
I feel that sometimes you have to find out from the student what got them into this class in the first place. If its something that you can play of off in class, its worth a shot. But on the other hand like stated above, as instructor there is only so much you can do, the success of the student is up to them.

Start by talking privately with that person to determine if you can how to approach the student. Try to appeal to that person's interest, background or career goals. In most cases this will work but in some it won't. I will continue to support that person but I make sure to let the person know that it is up to him or her to be successful. I will not take the blame for their failure. Just because they paid tuition does not mean they get a A in the course. They have to earn it.
