Respecting our students
I have found that simply respecting our students often build rapport. Even when I don't agree with how they dress, act or other. Young men and women are seeking respect (think back to how we felt at that age). If we don't respect them as human beings and individuals then we loose their respect and everyone looses.
Hi Albert,
This cannot be said enough. It is the basis of how the course is going to go. The same holds true for customers and patients. Everything revolves around how we are treated.

Respect is the number one key to encouraging students to want to learn. It doesn't matter if they are employees or students, respect is critical for all human beings. Respect is the major concept in a classroom and can only be delivered by an experience faculty.
Hi Donald,
Respect and relevance are two key words for teaching success. Student and teacher respect and application of newly acquired knowledge or relevance is a must.

I agree! in order for them to feel comfortable in your class you must respect them. how can we expect respect from them if we as instructros do not show respect to them.
being respected is not an inherant right of any individual, being fair and balanced is the key to dealing with students. respect will come only if it is earned. that's my take on the subject
I agree and believe that to receive respect from your students, you must also be willing to give it.
One important fact in this process is that respect is earned, not automatically given.
You must prove to me as I to you that you are deserving of my respect and consideration and I am deserving of your respect and consideration in return.
It's a mutually beneficial process that enriches both the instructor as well as the student.
I find it easy to show respect to a student that reciprocates the action, those that are less than respectful are harder for me to show respect to. Being basically respectful to each other is a basic get along mode, and until respect is broken, we should be able to get along ok. Show an open mind to feelings and opinions even when you don't agree. You can disagree without being disrespectful, and that goes for both instructors and students alike.
I am a firm believer that being respected is an inherit right of an individual. It is often said that respect is earned. In my classes, I emphasize that in order for everyone's goals and objectives be met that respect should be mutually given by all parties.
It all goes back to treating people with the same respect as you would want someone to treat you. I always tell my students the differance between you and I is just the fact that I have 16 years in the field and after my class the knowledge and experience that I have gotten from those 16 years will be given to you as well...we are all people trying to achieve the same goal...the students want to be top notch technicians and I want them to get there...so with that known we all treat each other with the very same respect and high standards that we all want to be treated.
