first week retention
the key for students retention is the first week
because if you can make good impact by pulling they're attention and make them to think on they're goals, set the classroom with an easy presentation,
that will make them feel good and comfortable.
Hi James,
Good way to set a comfortable tone for the new students and help them get settled into the course. By being able to talk about things they know (the grocery store) you have reduced the first day stress tremendously. From there you can build on course content and student experiences.

First impressions are important; I like to explain and outline how I create a "learning environment", rather than 'telling', that I will be expecting them to share their life experiences to discuss in class. I start the term asking for examples that are general and most students have experienced (eg who has been to the grocery store?) then as the term goes on I can gauge the students experiences and how active they will be in the classroom.
Much of your success as an instructor will depend on the planning and preparation you do before your first day of class and before each day you meet with your class.
Hi Jose,
If you can develop respect and rapport with your students at the beginning of the course you will be taking a major step toward keeping the students. You are right about making them comfortable in the class so they feel they are a part of the learning that is going on each day.
