Ask the student

How can instructors become aware of effective retention strategies for use in their classes?

I find that asking students what they like best about the class help me find out what they connected with the most and allows me to figure out how to better connect with the student in the future.

Hi Shantana,
Good instruction involves listening. You are right on with your forum comments. Effective listeners are valued by students. They know you care enough to listen to them and relate to their needs.
Gary

I agree with what has been said. Survey's work well at the beginning and end of terms. This way you get an idea of what works best. First and foremost you must listen to your students. If they realize that you are not listening to them, they will shut down.

Hi Rose,
It is critical that instructors help students to see the big picture of why they are in school and what they are getting out of their educational efforts. You are right about helping to keep them on track in achieving their goals and objectives.
Gary

Yes, and understanding what the students are looking to achieve not only as a result of the class but as a result of going through the entire curriculum. Help keep the students on track to achieving their goals and objectives.

Hi David,
Talk to other instructors. Ask the students. Look at the professional literature and see what articles are telling you about "best practices". See feedback from graduates about what helped them to be successful. All of these input points will give you a picture of what you can do to keep students in class. Respect and rapport are two of the most important retention strategies that you can develop. If you respect students and they you plus you having rapport with them will increase retention.
