Positive Feedback
Students respond more positively when they are given positive feedback.
I've also found that when they are praised for what they do well, they tend to work harder and come to class with a positive attitude.
Hi Kevin,
You make a great point in terms of providing feedback to students. We sometimes forget they they may come from backgrounds where they never hear anything positive nor are they supported in their decision to go to school. We then become a part of their support system.
Gary
The cool thing about positive feedback is no matter what age or gender all students like it. Some may have never heard positive feedback from anyone those will be the ones you touch the most.
I can see that this may be an area where I am lacking and need to be aware of this more. I will focus on providing good positive feedback in the future.
I agree. They respond better to positive feedback and constructive very direct criticism.
Students tend to be more open and productive when they get a sense of their accomplishments and that they are on the right track.
It all goes down to managing the morale and esteem of the student. Being a good motivator and acknowledging their success will lead to higher student retention in the course since they are motivated to excel.
Rember positve feed back is what gives a student confidence to figure out tough problems.
Giving all students positive feedback with different learning levels will encourage all students. This also creates a helpful and caring class atmosthere where all students may benefit.
Hi Charles,
Self esteem is so important in the learning process. You have captured the essence of this in your comments. This is good advice to be taken by all instructors.
Gary
It also has to do with self esteem. N Brandon wrote a book on self esteem that deals with this subject. We all like to feel important. And if our self esteem is low, our motivation to learn is also low. Communicating and providing positive feedback are ways in which we can boost self esteem and indicate to the student that he/she can be successful in compleating the course work. We need to set the environment for student success in the classroom. Students want to learn, but i they fell that they can not, they will give up and even drop out of school. Giving positive feedback helps to evelate a student's self esteem to the point to where he/she can feel that thay can indeed succeed. everyone wnats to succeed. Noone wants to fail.
Hi Bridget,
Students like puppies, wag their tails when praised. Responding to positive support is a natural if the students believe that the praise is genuine and accurate. Really helps to boost the involvement of students and their level of effort.
