Repeated recognition and reward

Have some more experienced instructors found that Millenials need more recognition and reward than previous generations?

This is so true! I have actually had students tell me that why should I care they are paying for it. They have also made comments that they should get to do certain things because they are paying for the school and whats in it. Students whine now if they have homework and we expected it when I was in school many years ago

Hi Neil,
Right you are about having to earn the right to succeed. Students once they graduate are in competition with everyone else that works in their field. They have to be able to do the work at a high level or they are going to be left out in terms of success. No body is entitled to anything.

I have found that you must discuss this issue early on with the students so that they understand they aren't automatically entitled. Having guest speakers come in to talk about their professional paths can help students to understand that it is a process not a right.

Gary,
totally agree with your statement, I have also found that many of then feel like they are there and that should be good enough!

Hi Amy,
To some extent. One of the biggest challenges is to get them to see the need for working hard at acquiring the needed knowledge and skills. They have a sense of entitlement about them that says they should receive the highest of grades by just being there, rather than earning them.
