The point about giving students recognition every class meeting is ver important. Students who miss class do not get that and often return to class and feel isolated and out of touch with the class.
They have missed instruction and need to get back in the flow. I believe that in my classes this is the reason I lose students.

This personal contact is so important for students. It helps to develop rapport with them as well as earning their respect.

I always try and make contact with each student. By making contact with each student they feel like they are part of the class. It also allows the students to stay interactive in the class.
i agree sometimes students are in class but there heads are not there. every students has to deal with life and sometimes that will side track our student.
Sometimes students are in class but they fall asleep because they attended an event or had something else to do socially. They should be able to get serious about following through till the end. I think some students are just not serious enough. I agree recognition, helps but I will also add praise and motivation to it.
