Student Retention
The responsibility of the instructor is to motivate and show respect and care for each student. Find what motivates the student and utilize it.
Hi Steven,
I work in an online classroom. For the first several quarters, I responded frequently in the discussion area and used this to build rapport. Then a coworker mentioned something I hadn't thought too much about - she tracked her responses to be sure that she responded to each student at least once throughout the quarter. Wow!! I truly hadn't thought of that. So now I track that too. It's easy to build rapport with students that I am similar to, but it's not as easy with those I don't have as much in common. This helps even things out a bit.

I would have to agree. Student retention often becomes a problem especially when the student feels as if they are not being focused on and or not being paid attention to. Altough there are times that finding what motivates a student, trying to build a rapport with them often ensures positive outcomes.
