help with retention

In order to succeed in student retention students need to know you care. We've all heard the saying that goes something like "they don't care what you know until they know that you care". Once they know I have their success in mind, then we've started the process of building a firm foundation for success in the course. Also, struggling students often are scared to ask questions so it's important to be open in class and encourage everyone to ask questions regardless of how silly they feel the question might be.

I absolutely agree. I had a student I know was struggling in a course I was not even teaching. I reached out to her to assist in whatever way possible with the permission of her instructor. I tutored her in this area because I knew she was not understanding the information presented! Sometimes students just need to hear it in a different way or hear it from someone else. Sometimes, they just need to hear that you care!

Hi Brian,
This is so true. Caring sets the tone for success because the students know they have support from their instructor. This helps them to become more engaged and focused on the course.
