How to?

Sometimes I find it very challenging to have a student in my program whom I know don't want to be there?? What do you say?

Hi Mary,
Good question to raise with your students. What are some of the responses that you get from your students?
Gary

Ask them how they think the material being taught in the class will apply to their career goals

ASK THEM WHAT MOTIVATED THEM TO COME

Hi Brooke,
I talk with such a student and try to see if I can understand their situation. I also talk with the student about how "we" can make the best of this situation together so we both can survive the course. This personal attention is often enough to get them to become involved in the course even if they really don't care about it. I also offer to go with them to the Student Support Office and introduce them to someone that can help them make a more meaningful and realistic career choice since this one isn't for them.

Brooke,

This is very true. I have had students that come to school because of their parents or because they get a stipend for attending. I try to encourage them to do there best and if they aren't doing well require mandatory tutoring. I have noticed that a majority of the time if I student doesn't want to be in class, but starts to really understand the information than they become more active and concerned with learning. I try to make every effort to make sure they "get" the information.
