Class Participation

During the Lecture Instructor should create questions regarding the course topics of the day that will allow all students the opportunity to participate. In addition, setting up group activities surrounding the material is very good for class interaction.

With doing so they instructor can evaluate how well the student retained the information.

I always try to get my students into a discussion about the material after each lecture. It helps to reinforce what they have just been taught

Valerie,
I use this strategy with the same results you have shared with us. My students really like coming up with names and mascots for their groups and they become very competitive in terms of winning the quiz sessions. In addition, students will always ramp it up if there is food involved. Adults are nothing more than taller kids so we need to capitalize on that in your teaching methods.

I have found success with forming groups, having them create a team name, and having competitions using the material covered in class. This creates a fun, competetive, and learning atmosphere all in one.....especially since I award the winning team a small prize or candy. It's amazing how much they can recall!

Jeri,
I have seen the same thing in my classes. Groups really help all students to become involved.

Matthew,
I use groups a lot in my teaching for the reason you mention. I get wider and more indepth participation for all students.

I agree, creating group activities takes the pressure off of the quiet, shy students yet allows them to participate in an environment that is more comfortable. I have seen students who are very shy become more engaged and eager to participate when given time and patience.

Letting students get into groups most definetly gets students to partipate more.

Jessica,
How do you use group activities in your classes?

Group activities or assignments also demonstates teamwork.
