adult students

adult students learn differently than younger ones. active learning vs. passive learning. don't treat your adult students as though they are in high school.

Anthony,
I always enjoy have older learners in my classes because they bring their life experiences into the discussions and they are very informative for the younger students. You are right about time limits and knowing what they want from their classes. They are focused and ready to do what it takes to get through the class once I am able to convince them that they can be successful in the class.

Adult students have the advantage in that they havetheir life's experiences to help and guide them through the career minefields. The major population fo the adult students do know their career path, the minority need guidance. The adults have a time limit in which they have to complete their studies and find jobs in which they have trained. The restrictions are also related to their familt pressures as well.

adult students also have real world experence that can be passed on to younger students.

Jessica,

You make a very good point. Adult learners have the potential to add much insight to our classroom. They have many experiences to share, some of which go hand in hand with the subject matter being taught. I believe keeping the adult learner engaged is important as well.

Jessica,
Good advice for us all to consider. We need to have an understanding of the characteristics of our students so we can provide them the support they need in relation to their life experiences.
