A simple greeting and the use of their name sends a signal that you care about them as individuals and when they know that they are preset in terms of a positive attitude about the upcoming class that day. I have always and will always greet each student every morning and by name. I teach the first mod so my students are new to the campus so this helps them get comfortable with the campus.

I always enjoy chatting with my students before class because I can get a feel for where they are coming from and how the class is going to go. These chatting opportunities also provide me with the opportunity to develop rapport with them.
