I use a technique the first day of class where I ask simple information on likes/dislikes and reasons for attending college. I allow them to discuss these openly if they feel comfortable as a large group or in small groups. I collect them and make comments on the interview sheet as I go along. Simple comments of..I am very interested in that as well, or I can def see you are motivated and determined can set their mind at ease.
