Respect and participation
It is true that adults are active learners. I get excellent results when 70% of the classwork is done in the lab.
I like this Elizabeth. Flexibility also translates into an exciting learning environment. Classes are not bored with the same routine.

Labs are where reality really sets in because they get to make application of the content they are being taught. They can to see the value of what they have learned and apply it in a realistic way.

I get a lot o positive feed back when the people are involved. When they can relate the material to their everyday life or if I can show them a new perspective of what they see everyday. People certainly like the lab because they feel as though they are learning "hands-on" instead of being told how the world works.
Stephane,
Yes they are. They have many life experiences and they want to be able to use those experiences in making applications of the content. You are providing them such opportunities through your lab activities.

Elizabeth,
This is what being flexible is all about. Learning leaders are instructors that can do such a read and then respond to the mood of the class. You are right on with this approach.

I also teach lab classes, I read the room, if they are feeling bluh I start with hands on. If they are upbeat I start with the lecture side then move into the hands on.
