Intrinsic motivations: are a good work ethic, wanting to genuinely help my students achieve their future goals.
Extrinsic motivations are: Earning the respect of my students and co-workers. Doing a good job for positive evaluations.

Intrinsic - My enthusiasm to teach my students about things I know that are new to them.

Extrinsic - It makes me proud to learn that my students become successful in their field and I know I was a part of that success.

I completely understand! I teach cosmetology as well, and I find it very interesting as to why people choose the career paths they do. I like to think that I provide the extrinsic motivation by always staying on various trends and aspects of our fireld. I make sure to incororate lots of different real world scenerios to help students pull the motivation out. I find that they all have the intrinsic motivation in the beginning, but begin to lose the same spark that insisted they choose this field. It's very mportant to keep that spark lit by always throwing in reminders of why we do job we love, and keeping them interested in new and exciting topics.

Simply put: I am intrinsically motivated when I am teaching a subject that I love. It's amazing sometimes; I barely have to prepare for class and I never run out of material.
Extrinsically--when I am recognized for my contributions by the students and faculty. In some cases I may be considered the go-to guy on a certain topic.

I think that I like what I do and I try to do my best, that is what motivates me intrinsically. Extrinsically is good to know that your peers recognize your effort.

David, in what ways to you share your excitement with your students? How often to you allow your students to witness your methodology of staying on top of your profession? They may find it interesting to know you are always learning just like them.

Daniel, well stated. Do you find that through your success and recognition by your peers you in turn inspire them to raise their game and work to keep pace with your accomplishments? Thanks for anything you can share.

I am a baking instructor and I am intrinsically motivated by new techniques. Wether I read about them, see them on TV, or even on youtube I get so excited about them, want to learn them, and then share them. I am extrinsically motivated by being a positive influence to my students.

By being knowledgable in the subject this enables me to enhance the learnig of the adult student. By mastering the subject being taught I am motivated to express my understanding to the student and when the concepts being introduced are successfullly comprehended this intinsically motivates me to become even more effective in transferring the lesson to my class. It motivates me to remain up to date on newer technologies and techniques that ultimately can be shared with my students. Extinsically, I'm motivated by the feedback from my students regarding understanding of material being introduced. When the students engage and return understanding to me this gives me a sense of gratification that I have done my job effectively and met the objectives from my lesson. My peer group's notice of success in the classrom/laboratory also tends to motivate me to enhance learning from my students. Student's comments on my teaching skills and knowledge of the subject matter greatly motivates me with a sense of accomplishment.

Phil, well stated. You know you are doing something right when students ask for you by name or request to be in your classes. Thanks for sharing.

Intrinsically I am motivated by students who return with success stories of their lives and how what I taught them has really made a difference in their abilities. Extrinsically it is always nice to hear your name being brought up by students when they are talking about the best instructors that they have had in class.

Dennis, your statement leads me to believe you are a true educator versus a teacher. Educators do what they do because it is a calling. If income were not of any importance and educator would still be involved with transferring their knowledge to others. Some teach because it is a means to an income, other educate because it is what they are driven to do.

Melissa, well stated. Sharing your knowledge is what teaching is all about. Not about knowing everything or always having all the answers but transferring your knowledge to your students. Thanks for sharing.

Intrinsically- I find motivation in the classroom from my students and when they have their "AHA!" moments because it means my explanation, the material, and my instruction made sense and will help further them in the program.

Extrinsically- I agree with some of the other posts that ackowledgement of a job well done is a motivator. Doing an excellent job and being recognized for it pushes me towards furthering my career.

Intrinsically I am motivated by my students knowing the answers to the questions because of my instruction.
Extrinsically I a motivated by recognition from my peers and authorities. Smiles on my student's faces.

Virginia, what would you say are your intrinsic and extrinsic motivators? Thanks for anything you can share.

Chemo, having such diversity in the classroom is a true blessing and allows you to engage students in ways that would be difficult in a more homogenous setting. Placing students into these diverse groups better prepares them for the real-world and the types of actual experiences they are most likely to encounter. I would also recommend you discuss this with your students so they realize how fortunate they are to be in a classroom with such diversity.

Daniel, well stated. Students can easily tell when an instructor is not excited about a topic they are teaching. By teaching the topics you are really interested you will provide a much better exprience for the student overall.

In the clinical situation I find it a rewarding situation to have a student explain the why of a particular decision he has made. In his explanation he is demonstrating his ability to express himself, recall his supporting information, and become confident in good decisions/actions he has made. It allows him to consider through trial and error, good pathways.

That's a challenge! I'm a member of the National Council of Teachers of English their subgroups of College Composition and Communication and Two-Year College Association and the state English teachers' association. Their publications help me stay aware of what new approaches have been and are being developed. In really good years, I get to go to the meetings.

I also stay aware of how what I'm doing is working. I'm always looking for a way to make the presentations and activities more productive, so sometimes I'm the latest research. Occasionally, I discover a really bad way to teach something, but often there's a little tweak that can make substantial improvement for both me and my students.
