Most of the time I have little problem with complete lack of interest but I do find that asking students at the very beginning about why they are taking this class is helpful in understanding intrinsec motivation.

I find in my classes there may be one or two students that seem like their not intersted, but at times are focused on every word I say. So what I try to do is figure what I was doing to hold their intrest if I can't figure it out I will pull aside and ask them what it was. never to old to learn somthing new.

Carin, can you share some of the things you do to determine lack of motivation versus other factors that may cause barriers with your students learning? When do you know to go the extra mile for a resource limited student versus waiting your time with a student that is not interested in what you have to offer?
