Stinkin Thinkin

When my students are feeling discouraged because they are struggling with a particular lesson and they become very doubtful of their ability to perform and they start using language like, "I can't do this," I call that "stinkin thinking." I tell my students, "No stinkin thinkin in this classroom - I don't want to hear, 'I can't do this' I want to hear, "I am currently working on mastering....(then whatever it is they are struggling with). They always laugh at first, but I find it amazing how it always seems to change their attitude. Their body language also changes as they say the new "verse."

How true it is. If students think that they can’t succeed then they won’t unless we can change their view of the topic, "I think I can’t succeed, so therefore I wont.it is like a self-fulfilling prophecy. We have to be aware of our students and mentor them when this situation arises

Courtney, Dr. Joe Pace from The Pacific Institute talks about the need for 11 positives to take over for a single negative. The more positive we as instructors can bring to our students we not only assist them in achieving their educational goals but we also help them grow in their self confidence and problem solving skills.

Wow! I really appreciate the tip. I teach a math class and a majority of my students struggle with some of the topics and I get a few that want to just give up if they do not grasp the concept immediately. I will be using this from now on. The power of positive thinking is amazing!

I couldn't agree more! I do not "allow" the words "I can't" to be said in class. Of course, students will say they can't but I find it's because they're frustrated or lack the confidence in themselves to do a task.

No "I can't" but "I am currently working on mastering"- I REALLY like that and joted down notes so I'll remember it!

Kathy, self-talk is very important and is part of the psychology of how the brain works. Work towards changing the negative self-talk into more positive reflection and you have a greater start towards achieving your learning objectives.
