kEEPING THE STUDENTS INSTREST SHOULD BE THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF TEACHING ONCE WE LOSE THE STUDENT ATTENTION THE LEARNING PROCESS IS TURNED OFF SO WE HAVE TO KEEP THE STUDENT ENGAGED IN THE SUBJECT SO THEY FEEL LIKE THE HAVE ACHEIVED THEIR GOLD.

I do my best to meet with each students either during class, before class or at break to get a better understanding of where they are coming from and how I can best assist them.
Once they realize I care about them as a personal and a student, this seems to motivate them to want to do their best... and I get to know all of my students a little better.
Andrew, great point. What some may feel is motivation is insulting to others. The real trick is to know your students well and understand what gets them excited about learning.

providing some kind of motivation depending on what works for a certain group most students don not need too much help with motivation but sometimes it is tough to figure out what motivates others
shawn, students that feel connected to the course materials do tend to perform better according to the work conducted by Vincent Tinto in the 70's and 80's. His work also discussed having a level of connection to the institution. I disconnected students tends to be a disinterested student and results in a lack of achieving the desired learning outcomes.
