Motivation
I agree with the six point description of a motivated student. I have noticed that a motivated student usually stays motivated through out their education period. My struggle is with those that are not motivated when they first come to class. I will use some of the methods discussed in this class to motivate those unmotivated students.
I agree because sometimes the student lacks the motivation from the start and has to gain that positive role through the instructor. I've personally observed a decrease in students' intrinsic motivation since our school has been approved to accept federal financial aid.
I agree motivation is the key for all adults.
Juanita, great job using different techniques to better understand your students. How to you make use of the information you gather to impact student learning outcomes?

I think that this is a key factor to teaching, getting to know your students asking questions like we are learn collectively. How many of you are audio learners, hands on and so forth. I even ask some beak the ice questions, Like what is your favorite food and how would you explain it or how would you teach it for the most simplest task. Just to observe and understand them and do the make up of the class to better understand where to touch up the class. Each time you teach a class several time though the material may be the same the make up machange how you teach it.
Peter, great point. Each group of students and even different sections of the same course may require a different approach to move students forward.

Looking for ways to motivate students is always a work in progress as every class is different.Use their interests can really help motivate them into liking the material.
Delisa, personal reflection is a key factor in student success. Thanks for bringing this concept forward.

It is important to allow students to reflect on their personal reasons for a higher level of education. When they enrolled they had a motivation that encouraged them to complete the enrollment process and choose a field of study. These same motivators will continue to drive the student to be successful.
MARY, can you share some of your techniques for getting to know your students and better understanding motivation versus possible learning disadvantages? Some students are highly motivated but lack basic skills such as study habits or may have some form of a learning disorder. These learning disadvantages can at times be mistaken as a lack of motivation. Thanks for anything you can share.

I remember my own experience of entering college immediately after high school. I was not one of those focused ambitious people that knew what I wanted to do, and I did not finish. Years later I knew exactly what I wanted to do, went back to school, was highly motivitated and graduated. I see this in my students. Some are there because they are focused on the learning experience in order to acheive a goal they have set for themselves. I know the importance of motivating those who may not be so focused. I am already using some of the techniques used in the lesson, but I had not thought to catagorize tham as intrinsic and extrinsic. It helped to clarify the purpose of these techniques.
unique, awesome insight and provides a critical reason why we as instructors must always be positive and enthusiastic. According to Dr. Joe Pace from The Pacific Institute, it can take 11 positives to make up for a single negative in a students motivation and behavior. This equates to a high level of positive energy we as instructors need to provide to our students.

Jane, also be careful of how you define motivation. Some students may be motivated but lack certain skills such as study skills or may even have a form of learning disorder. Get to know your students well before providing any type of labels.

Motivation can depend a lot on the individuals personnel life, the message they recieve at home about learning and having goals for the future. As instructors its important to be that positive role model that helps push them through to be as successful as they can be.
