Motivating Student Responses
The best way to get students involved in discussions and motivated to participant is to make sure they understand any input they have on a topic is valuable and that there are no wrong answers. Letting students know there are no wrong answers will help them feel more relaxed abotu sharing and also provide an opportunity to clear up and areas of confusion.
Jaceita, you mention two great techniques that have proven to be transformational in achieving high levels of learning outcomes. Both case studies and incorporating critical thinking skills are a must in today's educational landscape.

I also design case studies to to encourage my students think critially. I belive that we can teach students how to do something but encouraging critical thinking skills is a must. there are not right or wrong answers so I may ask the students a question like what would you do if anything diffrent this usually gets students motivated to answer quetions.
Barbara, I am a big fan of case studies and anything that engages students. The great thing about case studies is the ability to assist students in linking problems, solutions and activities. Building these bridges for students helps them in their association in overall problem solving. Great post and please share any of your specific projects with respect to how you get your students engaged within your case studies.

I design case studies to encourage students to think critically and apply their knowledge rather than simply answering right or wrong to a test question. They are learning actively and enhancing their understanding of the material.

I really do agree with you! There are no wrong anwers. Take the information and turn it around if it is incorrect, but in a way that is positive. I try and foster a very positive atmosphere. Everyone is there for the same reason-to graduate and pass the boards! So everyone is on the same page and all are equal as no one has a license yet! Lets help each other and it really works. Everyone shares their learning tips and also gets really involved in class discussions!
Jennifer, getting students involved and engaged can take on many forms. The goal is that they feel safe and feel their input has value to the larger group. Wrong answers are OK and assist in the overall understanding and learning process. Making mistakes is part of learning and feeling you are safe to make mistakes in the classroom help to minimize mistakes in the real world. Encourage your students to take chances and to grow above their comfort zones.

I find this very true. Most students either have an answer or an opinion of the topic or question. Providing a secure envirement allows them to share their thoughs and become part of the fabric of the class.
