Intrinsic Motivation

What do you feel the best way you can bring out someones intrinsic motivation?

I love this idea of assessing what "sparks" the interest of the students prior to delivering your lesson. Adapting the material accordingly will ultimately contribute to a higher level of intrinsic motivation which means a higher level of learning. This is what we all strive for. Thank you!

Scott, excellent technique. You are learning from your students and then using what you learned to keep them engaged. Well done and keep up the great work.

What I try and do in the first day of class (we rotate subjects every 3 weeks) is to hold an open discussion on what parts of a particular subject interests them. By doing this I can adjust how I present my material to try and capture the interest of the majority of my students. It seems to work well because if the students that are still on the border of getting involved see others totally involved it helps them to join in.

John, sharing your own experiences and the value of contribution can be very helpful. You may want to look into the area of Servant Leadership and speak on the many benefits of contribution to a group and to one's self. Robert K. Greenleaf has a couple of books on this topic and provides a log of great talking points that can help to motivate the intrinsic values in all of us. Take a look and let me know your thoughts.
