How to discuss previous lecture when alternated instructors
I alternate lectures between another instuctor. I would like to start lectures with asking about questions to the prior lecture or at least a brief overview, how should I review the information without stepping on the other instructors toes?
Very true Steve....in the medical field there are different techniques, not to say any are wrong but even when the studens get out to the field they will encounter yet another technique. Hearing a variety of different approaches helps so the student to can find what works for them.
Steve, great point and also brings forward the importance of problem solving. Understanding the multiple ways to get to the end result and accomplishing the goals are essential skills that employers want in their employees. I have often explained to my students that I am not only teaching them a new topic but I am training their brains to work in all types of situations. Like a muscle needs exercise to grow big and strong the human brain also needs to be trained to grow and become better.

I've found it best to explain to the students the benefits of hearing multiple ways to do things from different instructors. Especially in the trade that I teach, there are multiple ways to do the same thing. So i'll spin it so the class feels as though they are privelaged to hear two different styles or ways to accomplish their tasks.
Erika, best practice is to coordinate with the other instructor when possible. If coordination is not an option then let students know that each instructor has their own preferences with respect to the information they cover for a specific topic. You can then let them know what you feel is important but they need to verify with their other instructor with respect to knowing what is important for their class or any exams. Worst case is to get into disagreements about that the other instructor covered while students are present. Students NEVER need to know you may have a difference of opinion with respect to what information is covered, that is a PRIVATE conversation between you and the other instructor. Please let me know if I can be of any additional assistance.
