Motivation
The instructor must provide motivation in order to get the students motivated. It is imperative for a student to be intrinsically motivated; which may stem from extrinsic factors.
Ronald, what an awesome experience you provide for your students. Do you work with students ahead of time to help them prepare questions or is the process totally free flow and random?

As a working professional in my field, I like to motivate students by bringing real-world examples of projects into the classroom. It really helps for students to hear from, and interact with someone who is actually doing work that they may one day hope to do. I think it really gives them confidence that the activities they are doing in the classroom have a direct relation to projects they will encounter on the job. I always try to make projects and assignments directly relevant when applicable.
Maurice,
I believe you are correct when it comes to instructors needing to provide motivation to motivate their students; however, I believe students are just as responsible for determining the type of motivator, which works for their individual success.
Is being extrinsic a bad motivator if the task is getting completed?
Carlos, what are some of the ways in which you have motivated students to work beyond their current hand and eye coordination? Thanks for any information you can share with our readers.
James Jackson
Demonstrating motivation is very important in a lab setting. The lab setting often involves hands on training so it is very important for the instructor to provide motivation as acheiving goals are sometimes dificult for the student due to lack of hand and eye coordination. Therefore the instructor must provide motivation to encourage the students to keep trying to reach their goals.
Maurice, what discussions if any do you conduct with your students that includes the topics of intrinsic versus extrinsic values and motivations? Thanks for anything you can share.
