Organized adult learners

Most of my adult learners have a lot on their plate. They are single-parents,have school full-time, have a full-time job, plus some are taking care of their parents and some have major health problems. With all this, most students are organized--meaning that they have their homework completed before class, come to class on time with a good attitude, and are extremely motivitated to learn.I love teaching adult learners.

Hi Eddie,
I have experienced both types of learners and there is certainly some truth here. I have come to realize it really depends on the person.

Adult learners are usually more organized and usually more successful in our learning environment. They seem to better understand what is at stake. They know what is out there and what hurdles they will have to cross to be successful in the real world. Younger students seem to have the study skills needed but their confidence and motivation is generally short.

It is really great when the learners are prepared and organized. The entire group benefits if they are not impacted by someone slowing down the group learning process.

Hi Nicole,
The art of teaching is teaching a variety. I like to have a mixture! It is challenging when it is all mixed up. Each student is different and that in itself is a nice mix.

I also have many students who deal with so many things in their lives not always limited to home work and school. It's amazing how much our students push themselves to try and deal with all of these things and not get to that breaking point. I do agree that the majority of the time it is refreshing to be dealing with an adult learner rather than one who may be on the younger side. Although I have come into contact with issues on both sides of the spectrum. I have noticed that you will not necessarily have a great adult learner or youth learner. It all comes down to us and how we are reaching our students. Are we hitting that mark that makes them want to reach out and learn more? I always try and achieve the goal that I will inspire not just one group but all that I have in my class. So when it comes down to it I'm not sure if I would want all adult learners or not, because I do enjoy the variety I get in the classroom.

Hi Mary Jane,
I concur! Our students really have a lot going on, but for the most part they do a great job juggling it all.
