Treating College Students as Adults

I find that students relate to me as an advisor when I treat them as adults. I've heard others use the term "kid" and feel that this is demeaning and disrespectful even if the student is young and just graduated from high school.

Hi Steve,
When you treat all students the same you do not have any problems because you are being fair.

I have found when we treat all the students the same and with the discipline they are much happier

Hi Kenji,
When teaching adults, we must treat them and respect them as such.

Patricia Scales

I work as Advisor in the food industry, and no matter how young an individual is or act I must treating as an Adult in order to have the respect from the student, other wise I lost him/her.

Hi Chad,
When a student disrespects, nip it in the bud quickly and swiftly.

Patricia Scales

I agree, all people should be treated with respect. However some student choose to try and be the class speaker or leader. I think once a student makes the choice to be disrepectful in class, we as instructors should explain that respect is a two way street.

In my school, I have found that some students actually request to be treated as though they are in a traditional institution. They want the respect to be accorded to them that they feel appropriate.

Hi David,
I like it! I know of instructors addressing their students by Miss, Mrs., Ms., or Mr. to let them know that they are fully respected and will be treated as adults.

Patricia Scales

I address my students as "men" or "men and women" to show that I'm treating them as adults with the hope of getting adult responses.

Hi Martin,
Even adult students act like children at times. We have to remember they are all students regardless of age, and we should do all we can to assist them.

Patricia Scales

I tech at a technicial school and even though "some" of the students may act like kids sometimes , I believe part of my job is to help them. Treating them as an adult is one of the most important steps for this to happen.

Hi Sharon,
The term "kid" can be insulting to college students. We need to regard our college students as adults and treat them as such.
