How to instill work ethic
I find that student 40 and older can be self motivated, but younger students expectations are that the instructor tells me, shows me, and then does it for me, and i get the grade. They think that there is a short cut in everything that needs to be done. Unlike a video game, where if the die they have a reset button,we have to express the importance of there actions injuring someone at the end of the job.
Hi Patrick,
The first grade earned especially if it is a high grade is an awesome motivator! Most students can do, they just don't want to do.
Patricia Scales
I've found that students value the grades that they really earn. The challenge is getting them to earn that first good grade. After that they relish the opportunity to excel again.
Hi Mariko,
You have it! I love how you put it to your students. You are right employers are not going to tolerate this type of behavior!
Patricia Scales
I have found this to be so so true! Many of the younger learners want everything to be handed to them on a silver platter and when you let them know that you are not going to just give them all the answers--what attitudes emerge! I have had to sit down with many students and discuss with them what their goals are,how they plan on achieving them, where I can help them and where they need to take responsibility in their own learning. Bottom line, though, the student needs to want it for them selves, I can't want it for them more than they do! And reality is that employers are not going to baby them...they'll fire them first.
Hi Joe,
Generation Y can certainly be a challenge. We have to hold them to the same standards as everyone else. Make all students rise to the challenge and work for it.

I love this topic. I see this behaivior on a daily basis in the young learner. I think that Generation Y has an entitlement attitude because the powers that be have shielded them from failure.
When one fails they learn what not to do. With the right teacher they retool a new plan in order to succeed, and learn that nobody gets it right the first time. This learning style needs to be the expectation of our young learners.
Hi Candis,
Generation Y is definitely a challenge. I have learned that you hold them to the same standards, and they either rise to the challenge or else. You really get from students what you expect.
Patricia Scales
It is very difficult sometimes to motivate Gen Y to have a good work ethic. To try to re-instill these values in them is at times frustrating to say the least. One way is to try to get them to understand the reprocussions of this lack of ethics.
Hi Ricky,
You are right! I let them know off the bat grades are earned not given. You get out of it what you put into it.
Patricia Scales
I agree that we have to show the new generation that they have to earn the grade instead of just given them the grade after we partially do the work for them. Most of them do not have the motivation to go out and make the grades. Some of the generation y thinks that we owe them.
Hi Truitt,
I love it! I use the same tactic. As I am doing it they are so happy because I am doing it, and when I make them start from step 1 to do what I just did, and say it is your turn; they are so off guard.
Patricia Scales
One method I use with the younger students who want me to do it all for them, is to do it one time for them then totally dissasemble the project to be done and now turn to them and say YOUR TURN. By doing this they learn that they have to perform for a grade not the instructer.
Hi Robert,
I always let my students know that you must have the willingness to want to do well. Some students have the ability, but not the willingness, and others have the willingness, but not the ability.
Patricia Scales
The instructor as the subject mater expert in front of the class is able to show the learner that because of work and self displine in there profession they are where they are today. Work ethic is doing the job right the first time and ability to adapt to on going challenges with an open mind and an eargerness to learn new things. Weather the student is a boomer or gen X or Y, all should be willing and open to learning.
Hi Kenneth,
You are speaking nothing but the truth to your students. Our students need to know the importance of great work ethic.
Patricia Scales
I always tell and explain to my students why they have to learn and understand the information they are given in their in the classroom to be able to do their job and be able to make a living.
Hi Robert,
Nicely stated! My students know that they get what they earn! I do not give grades!
Patricia Scales
Hi WILLIAM,
When students period feel as though you are extremely knowledgeable, they have a different level of respect for you, and love having you as their instructor.
