You do need to know the material you are teaching!!! But being nice.....I have never seen anyone die from being nice. Smile. Treat people with respect. The Golden Rule will never fail you. My campus president would to tell me I could correct behavior and give constructive criticism and the student would not even realize what had happened. Treat people how you want to be treated! Makes for a positive classroom!!! Being a crab sets up a big barrier!
Loving your job as an Instructor, going above and beyond for your students. I beleive in spending extra time with students that need extra help, to help them to succeed.
HONESTY! Students need to hear the truth and receive honest feedback or they will not progress. This needs to be done diplomatically and not in an abusive manner, but it must be done.
In my opinion what sets highly effective instructors apart from others is a willingness to listen. Taking time to listen and really hear what the students are asking you makes all the difference.
I really believe that an instructor that has a passion for what they are teaching is the most effective. So Passion would be the most important quality for me.

The quality that sets highly effective instructors from others to me is their passion! If as an instructor we love what we do, we will be able to execute all the Skills mentioned in the program.
The ability to relate to your students has to be the most important soft skill in my opinion. I strive to make them understand that I really want them to learn this subject and why it has been important in MY life and how it helped me become successful in this field. I strive to let them have a glance of the passion I have for this subject and how I will do anything it takes to help them learn it as long as they want to learn it. I think after seeing how I feel about it, they become very enthusiastic .

In my opinion the most important qulity that sets highly effective instructors from others is the ability to adapt to change. There are many issues that can arise out of a day and the instructor needs to exert professional behavior at all time and have the ability to roll with the punchs.
The ability to be able to remember how the student feels and views life. Most intances students are younge and less expereinced than the instructor. By being able to use this as a means to get through the student will be more positive for the student learning experience.

I agree that a teachers energy is essential to the class room. I think that a major skill is being able to recognize low energy or a bad day and set it aside in order to teach. Everyone has bad days and I think its important to allow for that but to be aware of how to work with it honestly and effectivly by setting it aside. Sometims I find that simply teaching and intereacting with my students will change my bad day into a good day thus helping me have great energy for a great class. So I think its a two way street but awarness is key.
Effective soft skills is the important quality that sets highly effective insstructors apart from others.
A true passion and a great attitude will be the best way to get your students to be successful. the better you can display your soft skills, the more respect you will gain.
