soft skills as it relates to coworkers
as an instructor I find it very frustrating listening to coworkers complain about students or other instructors. Especially when they have no intention of doing anything to fix the problem. I liked that in this course it discussed that it is important to use soft skills and follow the chain of command when a problem arises.
Sheneka,
Those kind of situations can go bad quick. We need to be careful that we do not get caught in agreeing when someone is complaining. It causes bigger problems later.

I can always tell when instructors/students do not want to fix but just complain. I make a habit to ask questions, really listen, and then give feedback and possible solutions. When they are not remotely interested in feedback or solutions, it is more a venting session and I do not like being a part of that type of conversation.
David,
I am glad to hear that others feel as strongly about this as I do. Keep up the good work.

I COMPLETELY agree!! As instructors it is part of our job to identify and correct problems with students. Complaining to other instructors/coworkers does nothing to resolve the issue! We need to put our soft skills to work in order to effectively communicate with our "problem" students!
Candace,
Very true. But, it is always easier to complain about something than to fix it. Until people get into the habit to fix not much will change.
