Durrell,
EQ and IQ are hard to understand at times. What is important is that we continue to work with our students to try to understand others and be nice. Sometimes that is all it takes.
Philip Campbell
I believe common sense along good attitude and empathy are very important skills. In order to maximize the result from the use of these soft skills, I believe a balanced use of your skills is important.
Tom,
Listening is important to many people, not just students. Co-workers or peers often need the same amount of attention as our students.
Philip Campbell
common sense being the ability to understand what they are doing but comes with the knowledge of subjject materials and choosing the correct path, IQ can play into thisbut can limit our ability to see "the forest through the trees".
I think the most important soft skill in the workplace is listening to co-workers. I find that when I listen to what everyone in my group is saying, I can work effectively within the group. I don't need to force my way of doing things on others. I can adapt to those around me.
I believe the most important soft skill is common sense. Without common sense, it is hard to work in
business.
Paul,
Listening can overcome so many obstacles. Even if you do nothing after listening, the fact is you were there to listen.
Philip Campbell
lloyd,
I agree with common sense. Has anyone found good ways to teach this? Is it teachable?
Philip Campbell
Terry,
Emotions are the hardest thing to control, and that is why we try not to control, but rather manage. You can never tell how someone else is going to react to something. What we need to do is be the common ground for everyone in the class and then lead the class in the same direction.
Philip Campbell
I think some of the most important soft skills are to listen effectively and take your time to understand what the students concerns are, so that you can resolve an issue without any conflict or continued disagreement.
The most important soft skill is a combination of having a positive attitude and good common sense
I think that being able to take care of our emotions are so important, but I didn't reaize how important it is. I have really learned alot in this class.
Crystal,
It is a different culture. Understanding that is an important part of working at the 2 year institutions.
Philip Campbell
I think working @ a two year college with all kinds of diversity of students, the most important soft skills are empathy and understanding of the stress those are under. Most students here have jobs, family, and are trying to better themselves under stressful situations.
Karen,
Sharing that with students and encouraging them to do the same will help them be more employable.
Philip Campbell
Amy,
A positive attitude can conquer all.
Philip Campbell
I have found that my positive attitude does rub off on my students and my collegues. No better how bad our day looks I try to figure out how we can have a good day, usually by being the team player.
The most important soft skill is a positive attitude. Work is hard and it takes a long time to be secure in any new skill but any technical skill can be taught or learned if people are positive and willing to learn.
Melanie,
Believe it or not, that happens more often than not. We expect a lot out of our students. We expect a lot out of ourselves. When those two things do not match there is some dissonance that goes on and it is hard to deal with and understand. "Why would someone want to waste their money if they are not going to try?" What we need to realize is that is a question that may never be answered and just encourage students with positive reinforcement.
Philip Campbell
I believe that soft skills are important regardless of where you are employed. When I am in the classroom, I am able to put myself back into the shoes of my students because I was there a few years ago. I understand managing education, along with family, homelife, work etc and many times it can be a challenge to handle everything. Sometimes I find myself disappointed with someone because i don't feel like they are doing their best, but I try to keep in mind that not all student strive for A's like I did.
