Dr. Enrique,
I like the fact that students can communicate with each other as well. We all have a bit of fear from the unknown until we face it over and over again.

Shelly Crider

kristen,
That is oh so true! If a person cannot communicate on a cover letter, no need to communicate in the work force!

Shelly Crider

Very true, Kristen. Poor communication in the cover letter may eliminate you from even getting an interview, or may be detrimental while interviewing face-to-face.

during class, as i use my power point to educate, i am constantly opening up topics to discuss and allowing the student to openly communcate with each other. the task is to get them to start a conversion and discussion, this allows them to be themselves and comfortable with each other and futurely with the patients.it lets them open up and loss the fear of the unknown.

I agree that effective communication is essential especially in the healthcare profession.

absolutely! effective communication can make or break you...if your communication is not effective, even on a cover letter, this is a big factor that can keep you from becoming employed

Effective communication is imperative for my dental hygiene students as a large part of their career will be spent communicating with patients. To be effective, keeping a positive attitude will help to ensure that patients will work to maintain their health.

Maria Luisa,
You can even tell the way someone writed in an email as to what is going on with that person on that day.

Shelly Crider

Effective communication goes a long way for it does not only involves sounds like verbal, but also nonverbal. Students and Instructors alike must be conscious on this for this is where sometimes it can be misinterpreted. Body language can convey a lot of things. Verbal and body language must be congruent. Effective communicator must be conscious to all of these areas.

Natalie,
It is rather sad what we see coming into the classroom from our students. Good thing they have instructors like you to help them along the way.

Shelly Crider

I am amazed at some of the student's writing skills orlack of. Writing is an extremely important skill, especially with communication. I explain that grammar and punctuation is something expected any assignment to be submitted. A coma, if placed in the wrong place can change the entire meaning of the sentence. If, they were to read their assignment outloud, they would become aware of when they pause, ultmately, a coma would be indicated.

John,
Excellent point!! Looking in the want ads and you can tell what employers are looking for and they do, indeed, want an effective communicator!

Shelly Crider

It seems that the one thing almost all job adverstisements ask for is "good verbal and written communication skills." That should help make our point to students.

John Kavouras

GERMAN,
The world truly revolves on effective communication.
