Effective communication.
Effective communication is very important to accomplish exellent education.I use to tell the students how important is to develop their communications skills to get progess.
Miyuki,
Excellent analogy with the football setting! We do need to movitvate everyone to keep moving forward.
Shelly Crider
Teaching is about effectively communicating communicating information or a lesson plan to a group as a whole and then supporting each individual on their journey through your course. Any one student can hijack a class when they fall behind and begin asking multiple questions or needing to occupy more of your time.
I learned a lot from watching my husband coach youth football. The football team is coached to win games much like the students are coached to pass the class. When there are individuals not staying with the group it is important to find out what motivates them individually and use that to motivate them to assist them in passing your class. Sure there are those that no matter what you do end up not making it but by in large you can keep the class moving together as a whole throughout the course by properly motivating them and circling the wagons so that no one is left behind.
Joseph,
Email can be monster in itself. It is so important to have excellent communication to get across exactly what you mean.
Shelly Crider
Shelly I know that using acronyms change the way you take for granted on what you are trying to get across to whom you are talking over e-mail to.
Lana,
Not only all caps, but no LOL and cant c u 2day! This makes me wonder how communication will change the next 25 years!
Shelly Crider
You're very right! Even with email, students need to learn when and when not to use caps. I find that individuals are using the same format for writing as they use for texting. Emails should always carry a professional tone, but bridging the gap can be difficult at times when it comes to teaching this new generation of media and technology.
Dale,
Very good point. Many people believe in simple is better, but in an interview we need to show how we can be detailed oriented.
Shelly Crider
I think poor communication can even go beyond a poor cover letter. If you do get the interview, I have found many have poor verbal communication skills. More students communicate through social media and are not subjected to conversations face to face. In every class, I engage each one of my students in discussions. For some, this is very difficult. I don't settle for 'yes' or 'no' answers.
lloyd,
What about students who plan to telecommute? They think they do not have to learn to communicate, but they are oh so wrong. Communication is even more important when using technology to communicate.
Shelly Crider
I would also agree with this. I teach in automotive and communication is a key thing to ensure that they actually know what they have learned. If thay do not communicate I have know idea that they understand.
I advise my students that they will have to communicate with co-workers, customers and managers and tell them they will develope good skills in this area to become successful in the environment today.
Georgia,
This is good. As we know, notes can be like the old game "Telephone", by the time it gets to you....the story is different!
Shelly Crider
Benny,
Very good! We can even communicate with babies just by watching their non-verbal communication!
Shelly Crider
In nursing, communication is vital in assessing one's patients. I stress to students that an excellent method of obtaining information, is to sit and talk to their patients, and not to rely only on others notes. I remind them that they are the gateway to communicating with other members of the health team and what they know can determine the course of action for patient care.
gamaliel,
Learning from mistakes is an awesome way to retain the knowledge. We tend to remember what we have to rework!
Shelly Crider
Leslie,
Good point. How can we prepare students to be professional from a book. They do need hands on experience!
Shelly Crider
Indeed, communication is the start of everything to accomplish the goal of successes. Whether it is in the form of writing, sign language or verbal communication, it should be in the context where everything can be understood and see how easy it is that it can be used as recipe in achieving the goals
In healthcare education and for my class setting, when students have to take a terminology and abbreviations quiz, they not only need to know the subject but be able to spell avidly. Otherwise, they need to retake the quiz until they score 95% or better...it helps them learn from their mistakes.
I teach in the Dental profession and I agree. Many of my students have difficulty communicating.I find assigning teams for verbal presentations helps the student to communicate in a professional manner while preparing them for the workplace.
