I think Internet research is important to professioalism. Most of my students are not aware of news that go on each day. When someone brings news to class, the first thing they want to do is go on line to verify or research. Then the coversations began.

you might want to include some Internet research. After the students have read a chapter, have them find something on the Internet that relates to their reading. Something that is in recent news.

I struggle with the same issue, what I have implemented a couple of things. After assining a reading, I give a pop quiz or give a worksheet that forces the student to find answers to specific questions. Even if they aren't excited about reading they are more inclined to read because they want to do well in the class. I have noticed a huge improvement in class participation with questions about the reading being asked during our lecture. It is a slow process, but it does grow on them.
