I agree. My classes joke about the insurance commercial where the girl insists that everything on the internet is true...and finds herself bragging that she is dating a French "model." Students need to learn how to conduct proper research, and that includes knowing where to go to locate scholarly journals.
Abigail,
Yes.....this is an awesome plan as many students think that everything is safe on the Internet to gather your information on. You might want to add certain journals.

Warren,
Exactly what students think.....GOOGLE can solve anything!!! Be it right or wrong! This is where we need to guide them and show them what is the correct way to research!

Having a search engine such as Google is beneficial to the learner but it does have it's pros and cons. Learners should identify with the validity of the information and not totally rely on the information presented. The learners still need to use the basic core of learning such as listening, reading and writing.
Abigail, I really like this suggestion, thanks!
So one thing I ask students to do is to use the advanced search function on Google and limit their searches to .edu or .gov sites for certain projects. I also ask them to present serach results on certain disease topics and as a class we look at each site and decide which one id=s th most likely to be trustworthy and valuable.
Beyond the problem of bad information I find that students often want to replace any real learning with the internet. Why bother to learn anything when all I have to do is GOOGLE it. I feel this is a big part of the reason why students today have trouble with critical thinking. They bother to reason out anything anymore. Just type in search and click.
Richard ,
I totally agree....it is good to have resources from a viable site to be able to hand over to students. Even having bad sources is a learning experience for students!

We as Teachers need to guide them so they can pick a good information source from a none credited one. This is what drives me everyday to be an instructor.
Chris, I agree. Students are so quick to believe anything they find on Google, Yahoo, Facebook, etc, and take it as "gospel truth", rather than actually thinking it through or cross referencing from other sources.
Chris,
This is oh so true. The problem being, you can find any answer you want to on the Internet. We have to teach students to search for valid stories.
