Teaching The Writing Process

As a teacher of writing, teaching students that writing is an actual process is an important part of my classroom. How do you teach the actual steps in the writing process to your students?

kate,
I like how you mentioned time management! I like to "sneak" this topic in as well!! Students rarely think they have a problem with time management, until it is too late!

I teach design, but I find that your point about process is really applicable. The more students understand and plan for the revision process, the better the work they produce. I think this also helps with other soft skills such as time management.

E.,
Good point on the one writing process!

Shelly Crider

First, instead of calling it "the" writing process, as if there is only one, I suggest that they call it "my" (as in each student's very own) writing process.

Second, I tell them that one of my professors said that writing begins with a full page, not a blank one. That is, I emphasize the importance of revising.

Third, I present my version of SCAMPER to aid my students in improving their ability to revise their rough drafts.
