Veteran students.
I've seen a few trades students who are older veterans that seem to hide inside themselves when asked to present projects, speeches or demonstrations. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and how you get them to actively participate.
I totally agree, I have done the same thing with very good results.
Most of the veterans have good discipline from their service time, and really do care to do well.
This is a way to help them progress and be seen as roll model/mentor even if they don't see it.
What a great idea. This could be used for any student, even students with children or extended family situations.
One home projects is to communicate with grandchilden age range 10 to 30...kerry
I agree the vets I work with understand the whole team needs to succeed. They tend to be good leaders.
When setting up lab groups I have used the vets as the "team leader" during lab exercises, They make sure that all are involved in the activity, follow through to the proper resources for specific information, delegate tasks pertaining to the lab exercise and make sure lab is cleaned up by the team. I find that most have great leader skills and it opens up the communication between peers and instructor.
Very interesting you should mention soft skills. I haven't done that. So far I haven't seen much success in regards to getting a hint of participation. This could be interesting. Thanks for the information and response.
I have experienced veterans with this quiet personality in dental residency programs. We attempted to use "soft skills" to develop best communication and find the best method at the time to draw them out for the learning process.
