Generational Differences
By Understanding and/or reviewing over the generational cohort, it has helped me understand some behaviors and I will implement more learning techniques.
I also teach in a classroom of varied age groups , being able to use different methods of teaching is important.
Donald,
and this also helps them to feel valued & that their life experiences mean something.

Fred,
this is a great idea & point. We need to try to help all learners in our classes regardless of which generation or if they are from a different generation than we are.

I find that each student pervious life experience brings forth information that benefits all age groups. Engaging students to share their previous life experiences is the key to connect all age groups.
I'm in agreement with that! Sometimes I think I'd like to be in a classroom with an old opaque projector, an overhead projector, my computer-connected projector with PowerPoint, VoiceThread, and other technological goodies, surround-sound speakers, plenty of whiteboard space, wall space for posters and diagrams--and the technology to be able to switch seamlessly from one to the other!
When teaching multiple generations, I like to use a teaching style that each group feels comfortable with. I will use manuals along with computerized manuals so each generation can choose. I also find if I select groups so that some groups have both generations in them so they can help each other in the areas that they are stronger in. But, I will also leave generations together if I find that it works out better. I`ve found either way to be very successful.
My classes are small with age ranges 18 to 40+. We try to use multiple approaches to deliver information, ie verbal, visual, and hands-on when possible. Asking students to discuss among themselves various topics seems to help them relate to each other better and experience different perspectives of the subject matter.
Dale,
this sounds like it would be a great activity & really help each group understand each other.

When teaching classes with multiple generations it is tough to find a teaching method that attends to all students at once.
Great opportunity to break into groups based on their age if they don't mind the categorization. Maybe each generation represented can brainstorm about their common learning styles.
Brandon,
this is a good point & I think this is a challenge regardless of the generations (but especially so there). When to use the most appropriate methods is a challenge.

The biggest challenge in teaching to a classroom of multiple generation cohorts is knowing when to use what when. Knowing when to use lecture, interactive videos, hands on or using web based teaching. A major challenge
Generations always have specific cultural references and learning style differences. By having a better understanding of these different learners I can better accommodate their different learning styles in my classroom.
LaMikka,
any time we can develop a better understanding of the diversity that is around us & present in our classes we are better suited for effective instruction.

It has also helped me to analyze my preference for teaching strategies in spite of my knowledge of, appreciation for and participation in a variety of strategies.
