Engaging Gen Y Learner
I agree that when engaging Gen Y learners the information must be relevant and Gen Y learners must understand why it's important before they decide that it's something they should learn.
Before introducing students to writing, I tell them why they need to write well in almost every occupation. I focus on my non-teaching career and make the point that written communication is LEGAL in the legal profession and that what is on paper is usually taken very seriously.

Also, if the learning is not relevent then the student probably won't retain what he/she learned. What's great about teaching in a practical technical school is we can make science and math relevent and watch eyes light up as students start to REALLY understand.
