I think the students that I teach are on their phones so much already, I am not sure I want to encourage them to be on them even more. I do understand how it could benefit a classroom situation but having something class related like that, almost gives them free reign to use their phones whenever and however they want during class.

Yes, you are correct. In class I do suggest polling apps and the like, when appropriate and of course when it fits into the schools acceptable use policy.

I agree with David, students 'know' when they should and shouldn't be on their mobile devices.
I don't think the suggestion in this course to incorporate a class Twitter feed is meant to have the students on their cell phones using the feed DURING class. I think it's being suggested as an additional way to connect to our students using technology outside of class hours.
