I have put students in small groups and this does seem to help motivate them to get more creative
I agree, in addition to be a homework assignment you can place the student in small group. This way it students can feed off each other creative. This also helps stimulate learning, and knowledge of the topic the instructor is teaching.

Since this is Phoenix at 110+ degrees I am going to substitute a balloon instead of the jello. They can draw or cut out the different cellular components onto the balloon. We'll see how that works!
Drawing assignments are great activities that can be done at home.
I try and let them expand on a subject by letting them explore other possible alternatives to the ones I have given
