Types of Learning

Many Students have many different styles of learning. It is always good to be able to identify the students learning styles so that you can teach them accordingly.

I agree, you need to have many different styles of learning for all students so they will stay attentive.

This is a teaching concept that we must always stay open to. I try and remember some of the better techniques that I use for my own learning style and implement them in my teaching.

Philip, it is a great plan to break the tension and refocus your learners with naturally occurring humor from stories or spontaneous class happenings.

With an average student attention span of around 15 minutes, besides changing things up I also like to attempt (not a comedian, that's for sure) a humorus anecdote and/or student feedback and their personal stories which correlate to the material.

Using toys and other common household goods to teach needed clinical skills brings learning to an everyday level. It is a great way to introduce the learner to the topic prior to them seeing the same process in the clinical setting.

Catherine, if you don't "kick it up to the next level" you can easily lose their attention.

This is why is it always good to have a variety of methods to accomodate visual, auditory, and tactile learners. It has been proven that students become bored after 45-50 sitting listening to lecture even with powerpoints. Sometimes you need to kick it up to the next level to shake things up!
