Communication
Constant communication with students is the most important and effective way of getting feedback on their understanding. I will often pause in the middle of lecture to ask if everthing is making sense and to make sure everyone is following. I will also ask for any questions regarding the material up to that point.
i feel that asking them to participate during the class will give them a sense of wanting to be able to join in the discussion
Laurel, I agree with you about building rapport. The responsibility starts with the instructor, and then is one of partnership and sharing for the students.

I believe communication is the most critical aspect of teaching students. Keeping the communication channels open and knowing the strengths and weaknesses students have is essential to knowing what areas of the curriculum need to be stressed, retaught, and possibly reanalized to better service our students. Students will perform to their potential, if they have a good rapport with their instructors and classmates and find learning fun and challenging.
Non-verbal components are also essential as well, determining understanding through posture and facial expression
You are correct. Some students learn through analogy, but others have not leraned to make the correlation. It's best to understand how to communicate to your students.
