eyes or ears

I used this technique in class. Students loved it.It was suggested that I use it as an icebreaker.

To follow it up, I had students spend 60 seconds observing their patients from the dooorway.

Crystal, I'm so glad you are planning to implement this next week. I know your students will learn from it.

This is a great idea. The summer semester starts 7/16 and I'm going to use this exercise on the first day of every class. This is a perfect way to allow the students to realize at what level their observation skills are and what they have to do to improve them. As healthcare providers, our observational ability must be at the top of our priorities to master. Often, many patients are reluctant to tell us everything, so it's imperative we know how to read our patients.

Melissa, thank you for sharing how you will use the new ideas you have gained in this course.

I think that this Eyes or ears technique is wonderful and it would be a very good ice breaker -- in addition to that the adapation that was made by observing patients from the doorway is a great addition!

I wish I would have known this from day 1 and I can't wait to utilize it. It will be a great introduction and it ties in to being that "out of ordinary " experience that we all strive for to help them remember.

I know this isn't in this forum but I also liked the secret alarm idea with happy birthday and washing hands -- I teach an A & P course and play a youtube song about the blood flow through the heart to help them remember the pathway -- I think I'd like to try and use this every so often and play the instrumental for it and when they hear it have them diagram the pathway -- just to keep them in practice and help make the transition from short term - to active - to long term memory with the blood flow.

Great ideas!

Paula , it can teach people to read body language as well. This is a skill they will need on the job.

Plus, it is a great technique to initiate the observation of posture and reactions

Tim, some people do not realize what body language and social conversations can reveal about them. I'm glad you are an observer and have pointed it out to us.

I like the eyes and ears exercise. I walk through the classroom and listen to conversations and observe what students are doing within the first five minutes of the class period. Students think I'm merely being frdiendly, but there is much more to it. It's a way for me to learn simething about my students.

Juanita, thank you for sharing your successful adaptation of this activity!
