memory

What are some other ways and strategies instructors can use to help students retain information?

Yes. I agree students remember when you make it relevant.

Ann, I agree students remember when you make it relevant.

I found that if I tell students WHY they're learning/have to remember something, they tend to! I found out by accident- students would tell me "Oh yeah- you said to remember that because if we give too much of this drug, this will happen to the dog." (or whatever the case will be). I think also that the reason they must remember something has to be
1. Practical & applicable
2. Have a consequence of (or not) remembering it(animal death, law suit, failure, they'll be a star employee, etc)

Glad you were able to connect here.

Hi Brandon! Didn't know I had such a good resource where I work! You'll have to explain in more detail for me!

That is such a great idea. I love taboo and that would be a really good way to learn the material.

Vicki, these are excellent suggestions.

Engage more visual activities. Have study groups, such as open disscussion. Have students ask each other questions about the topics being disscussed in class. Go on field trips to loccal health clinics and hospitals.

Brandon, this is a great teaching strategy that I know your students must both enjoy and learn from. Keep up the great work!

My favorite and probably the most exciting would have to be having them act out the medical terms. And if they are too easily acted out such as puritis...I'll have them try to describe them and get the class to guess like the game Taboo or the gameshow Pyramid without actually saying the word, it works great!

There are several ways to help students retain information. Some examples include activities like jeopardy games in which student's create their own questions; assigning students to create their own flash cards for an in-class review; posting questions at the beginning of class and giving rewards for those who have retained the information, etc. Basically, any type of activity in which learners read, write, and listen to a concept help improve memorization of the topic at hand.

These activities serve to "disguise" memorization so students enjoy the process.

I use Bingo, and concentration games as interaction tools to envoke memorization skills

Brandi, I like this activity as well.

I like to play the old game of Memory by matching the Term with the definition.

Evelyn, if you review some of the contributions on the posts, you will find many strategies teachers are using.
