Activity

What sort of learning activity should you avoid if your learner already has some resistance towards active learning. I am particularly interested in beefing up my active teaching methods in medical terminology and applied anatomy and physioloy to the student with little science background.

Penny, I would think since the words are unusual, they are even more memorable.

I would have my students come to the board and write a word (not necessarily politically correct) and the class would have to disect it. Some of the words they would come up with was quite funny....which in turn helped them remember their roots, pre's and suf.

Travis, thank you for acting as both teacher and facilitator in your classes. Both roles are essential and benefit students in a number of ways as you described.

I also have had difficulty with facilitation of group activities with the small class of 4 or 5. It just seemed the most natural and comfortable choice to sit in the group and adopt a disscussion attitude vs the lecture. I found this to be more rewarding for both myself and the class. The response has been very positive and I do believe they tended to ask more questions and be more willing to take the risk of answering questions. I've actually adopted this into the larger classes by taking time during review to break the class into smaller groups which are cooperative amonst themselves and we discuss the topics and questions.

Virginia, I find small classes like these difficult to teach, also. Sometimes I will sit down with my learners at their side and discuss versus lecture, using interaction throughout.

One of my challenges is with a class of 3-5 students...seems to be harder to get them motivated.

I also use the jeopardy game and find it works well with anatomy.

changhiz, I would start with something familiar like Jeopardy, which is perceived as an adult game. I'd also put the class in teams to answer so no one person is put on the spot.
