Refocusing students

While teaching medical term I have to change up how I teach the course each time. My students are different each mod so I can't expect every student to learn the same way. So by refocusing myself based on the student needs is highly encouraged.

Carrie, you might want to get them more involved in the learning process with some of the activities in this course.

I have been teaching Medical terminology for the past 2 terms and I have has 2 very different classes. The first class was engaging and very active in the learning process. Whereas the second class it’s like pulling teeth to get them to do their homework and assignments. I even have on student who falls asleep while taking exams. How do I get them excited about homework and projects?

Katherine, some modules do clearly define how to teach themselves.

I agree you must adapt the class lecture content to the student needs and learning style so we have to change the way we teach from mod to mod for the sucess of our students

Sarah , the best teachers adapt. They adapt their teaching plans and teaching methods to best fit the learners.

I actually did the course "teaching the Genenration Y students" on here and it really helped me to understand that different students within different generations all learn differently. And it is important to adjust the way you deliver your lesson.

Jerri, I agree that the more "OUTSTANDING" the stories are, the more students remember them and the concepts they represent.

I have taught Medical Terminology for 7 years, and was successful with visual and interactive classroom strategies. Gruesome stories work too!
Bringing into the classroom "real" examples of the word or topics is very interesting and memorable.

I would agree that you have to use a variety of different methods in teaching this subjects to maintain the students interest. Interactive exercises seem to engage the most students and help them with retention of the material.

I will be teaching medical terminology for the first time next quarter, and I have found myself probing the students now to see where they stand now in their knowledge of Medical Terms.

I briefly introduce my students in medical terminology in an orientation class. Many of these students have heard some of the words for the first time. I can easily see how changing up styles over the long term will benefit retention.

my students come to me with very little med term. and I have to devise a plan to help me understand who knows what

I have found that I may have to use a few different methods for each class. (depending on the topic)I have a wide variety of students regarding their previous medical backgrounds, education level and learning style. However, I will say that the majority learn best with interactive exercises.

Jayson, you are planning your teaching with a student centered focus. This helps the students retain information.
